Style Inspiration: Steampunk

Even though I’ve never set foot in a Comic-Con, something I’d very much like to do, I am a huge fan of steampunk. It might be because of how much I love the Victorian era and my love of fiction novels of that genre, but either way the elegant fashion combined with the hard metal details just fascinates me. However, most steampunk style is much more intense than I would ever wear as regular clothing as apposed to a costume. So I created an style inspiration that would bring steampunk to the streets. Thankfully corsets are in fashion again, burgundies and golds are forever complimentary, and lace up boots are fabulously chic!

Style Meets Childhood: Fashion Collaborations

In recent years, it has become a common trend to combine modern fashion with the past. So many designers and fashion enthusiasts are reaching into the fashion time capsule and pulling out anything that interests them. Crop tops are back. Bellbottoms too. And the list goes on and on. But one recent trend that I’ve noticed creeping its way into the mainstream, is fashion lines combining retro and modern childhood favorites with fashion and accessories. While many know of Hello Kitty’s fashion takeover not so long ago, here are three more childhood fashion takeovers that are occurring right now.

Barbie x Missguided

2017-07-17 (9)

With Barbie making headlines within the last couple years with her new body types and appearances, it is not surprising that someone would decide to incorporate her into current fashion. Missguided, a UK based retailer, released a collection entirely inspired by Barbie. Everything about her is represented in the clothing and accessories including her signature pink color. Unfortunately, the collection has sold out hence the “Barbie broke the internet” statement, but luckily it will be restocked soon.

Hot Topic Build-a-Bear

2017-07-17 (11)

I remember renting out the Build-a-Bear in my hometown for my birthday party so many years ago. Back then it was awesome to have Sketchers for your bear, but now it seems Hot Topic is getting in on the action. Hot Topic has always tended to use pop culture in the clothing that they sell with a majority of the merchandise being Harry Potter, Star Wars, DC Comics, or etc. themed but this is different event for them. While this may appeal more to younger girls who still go to Build-a-Bear, it may appeal even to an older crowd who find off kilter bear themed fashion awesome.

Minions x Casetify

2017-07-17 (13)

Now this isn’t exactly fashion, but as attached as we are to our cellphones nowadays are phone cases might as well be considered accessories now. Minions are a recent trend and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. They’ve somehow managed to escape the confines of their animated movies and have become a staple of culture for some, while a growing annoyance for others (which matches how some feel about them within their movie world). Nevertheless, minions are hilarious, adorable, and nicest shade of yellow so having them as your phone case would be following a trend that just doesn’t seem to be going away.

And there you have it! What childhood and children-aimed things would you like to see combined with fashion?

My Top Five Favorite Stores

It must be obvious by now how much I love fashion and shopping. There are many different websites and stores that I frequently purchase from. However, I do have a handful that I prize over others! Here are my top five favorite stores!

shopping

5. Tobi

I came across this store after clicking on a Facebook advertisement. I can definitely say that I was wary of them at first and expected the clothing quality to be lacking and for the store to be lackluster overall. Thankfully I was proven wrong after I made my first order and found the clothing was nicely made and everything fit. The clothing style is quite edgy which is right up my alley but there is definitely something for everyone at Tobi.

4. Missguided

This is one of two stores that I only discovered after binging British youtube videos. My favorite part about it is the way the website is organized. I never knew that there were so many ways to categorized dresses and other pieces of clothing. The only downfall I could find with this store is that the sizing for shoes is slightly off due to the shift from European sizes and US sizes. However this is a minor thing that can be fixed by simply sizing down by half. Other than that Missguided can do no wrong.

3. Express

I had loved this store long before I was even old enough to actually wear any of their pieces. But the moment I could, I went on an insane shopping spree that made my wallet cry. Every item in Express is wonderfully made though my favorite items have to be the business wear. I like dressing business casual on a daily basis and have raided their business section a lot. The portofino shirts and blouses are gorgeous but be mindful that they have to be taken care of well. One tiny stain and the top is often history, especially if white. Nevertheless Express is wonderful enough that I keep coming back.

2. Forever 21

I have adored this store for as long as I can remember and most of my basic tanks and accessories were purchased from here. It’s no surprise that I love it since there are three of them in my city in general and I spend a little too much time on their website. Everything from F21 is well made and gorgeous and you can find tons of trendy styles for wallet friendly prices. And considering the fact that I am a college student this is a huge plus for me. I’ve never had an issue with F21, and I doubt I ever will.

1. ASOS

I’m going to be blunt: I love giving ASOS my money. Seriously, everything on their site is amazing and I can’t imagine never having come across it. (Thank you British youtubers!) The quality is phenomenal and their is something for everyone! I recently discovered that I’m considered petite by designers and ASOS has entire sections dedicated to itty bitty girls like little 5’4″ me. Their website is organized beautifully and while the prices are a little on the higher end, your money will be well spent. They also have a section for small business boutiques which is incredibly because they need support too!
I’m a huge shopping fiend so spending time in the brick and mortar store or the website of any of these shops is kind of my favorite past time. Let me know what you think of these fab fashion stores in the comments! Do you love them as much as me?

How To Successfully Online Shop

As much as I love trips to the mall, there are times when I don’t want to have to leave my house just to buy some new heels or a tank top. Which is why online shopping is such a great creation. So here are five tip to make ever online shopping experience a perfect one!

Check the usual price range first

Always look through a store’s selection of tops, dresses, etc to make sure that you can afford at least a majority of it. There is absolutely no point in checking out a store and falling in love with their pieces to only discover that everything except some hairties are out of your price range.

Always read purchaser reviews

As we live in a time in which some have no problem taking advantage of other people, checking customer reviews are vital to a good online shopping experience. Not only will you find out if a piece runs big or small, or if the color will look slightly off when delivered, but also if the company itself is legit or not.

Know your size on the size chart

I’ve actually been surprised to hear that not many people—at least the ones that I met—do this. But I’ve found that it’s a sure fire way to make sure the clothes you order actually fit. And since no two company measures in the exact same way, keeping consistent track of your personal measurements will make shopping simpler.

Pay attention to sales and deals

If there’s a way to pay less than retail always go for it! Some of the best deals happen at the beginning of a new season, and during most holidays. It’s also a good idea to frequently check out some of your favorite stores website as sometimes they have sales for absolutely no reason other than because they can.

Don’t impulse buy

This is the most important tip on this list! Impulse buying is quite simply purchasing something only because you have the money and not because you genuinely wanted it or had a reason to get it. I’ve been victim of this a couple times and regretted. Not only is it a waste of money and space in your closet, but you also end up owning something you neither need nor want. It’s just not worth the loss.
And there you have it! I have stuck by these five simple online shopping guidelines and have never had a problem. What are some of your online shopping techniques?

Five Tips for Mastering High Heels

I have been obsessed with shoes since I was a little girl, especially high heels. However when I first started walking in them at twelve, I had no idea what I was doing. My mom outright told me that I walked like Herman Munster. You know the Frankenstein-like father figure from the Munsters tv show?

Herman Munster

But I didn’t want to be Herman! Oh no I wanted to be feminine like his wife Lily.

Lily Munster
Gotta love a girl with a skunk stripe. Slowly, but surely I eventually figured out the way of the high heel walk and I’ll share my secrets with you!

1. Start Small

If you’ve never really been much of Heels kind of girl, jumping right into a pair of stilettos would be like jumping of a bridge in other words, not smart. The best way to approach Heels as a newbie is start small and work your way up. Kitten heels are adorable and often easier to walk in than any other kind and when you feel ready you can gradually buy or wear shoes with higher heels on them.

2. Wedges

Now this tip is similar to the first but yet vastly different. For some heels aren’t impossible but maybe since they don’t wear them often, there is a period of wobbliness any time they put them on. The only way to remove the wobbles is to wear heels nearly all the time, however, even though I do this, I wouldn’t recommend all people do. Hence wedged boots. Wedges don’t mess with the structure of a person’s foot as much as regular heels and as a result you can practice in them all the time without risking your ankles. And since boots are versatile with a multitude of different styles available you’ll never be in want.

Summer Bonus!! – Wedges are perfect summer shoes when worn in a sandal style so this tip is applicable to all times of the year!

3. Tiptoes

Now this one might sound ridiculous and when enacted it kind of is, which why you do this on your own time at home. If you can’t walk around comfortably on your tiptoes or can’t balance, heels will be a nightmare for you. So for sake of your heels wearing night out or your special event, be a little girl pretending to be. Ballerina and walk around on the balls of your feet. You may look ridiculous, but since you’ll be doing this on your own time no one one will even see you.

4. Find Your Style

No two woman is alike, and no two type of heel is either. There are so many different heights, colors, materials, and styles out there that there is at least one kind of heel that could appeal to a woman. So to make it easier to wear them, find the kind you like. The kind that put a smile on your face every time you put them on. I know I wouldn’t be me if it weren’t for my go to wedges.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Now this is the simplest tip on this list and is applicable to pretty much everything: practice makes perfect. If you have an occasion where heels are a must—or at least strongly suggested—practicing in them any chance you get is the sure fire way to master them. Wear them to buy groceries, while walking around the mall, going to get the mail or visiting family members. If you have to put shoes on your feet to go, put on your heels. Then by the time your event rolls around you’ll be strutting like a champ.

Style Inspiration: Beach Vibes

What better way to celebrate summer than a beach inspired ensemble? Whether you take it to the actual beach or just spread the beachy love around the mall, its the perfect summer outfit. The romper’s light natural color makes for a clear reference to the sand and the denim of the shoes reference the ocean. The scale detailing of the earrings and the dolphin charm on the necklace tie it all together.
